It was exactly 11:00 am when Janet was found alone at home, shaking terribly and could not move. When Janet’s husband and brother-In-Law drew closer and held her, all she did was stare at them and cry. From then on, she couldn’t speak again.
This is the story of Janet Amenya Gyesu, wife of Amenya Kumako, the Bible Listening group leader in Amenya and a mother of six (6). The family lives with Amenya Kumako’s younger brother, Stephen Kumako, who first saw Gyesu in this horrific state. The incident happened a year ago when Kumako Amenya left to the farm one morning. His brother had gone out for his daily activities, while the children had all gone to school leaving Janet alone in the house. When Kumako returned from his errand, he saw Janet trembling in front of the house. She couldn’t move. “I didn’t know what to do so I ran as fast as I could to inform my brother who was at the farm,” Said Stephen.
When they returned from the farm, she was shaking terribly. She couldn’t move. When they approached and asked her a question, she watched them and began to cry. That was the last time they ever heard her talking. They hurriedly took her to the hospital.
Janet was diagnosed with Global Aphasia (a severe type of aphasia that occurs right after a person has a stroke) by the doctor. Kumako Amenya became extremely troubled and worried because a few weeks earlier, his brother was involved in a conflict over land ownership which led to the decay of both his legs. He spent all his money searching for a cure. The financial struggle, physical and emotional pain he went through was unbearable. Regardless, Kumako was able to afford some medications for his wife.
A few weeks later, Janet Gyesu was discharged but was still bedridden. Kumado said, “The doctor advised us to keep chatting with her. But there was no one in the house to do that. So I gave her the proclaimer.” She began listening to the Word of God in her mother tongue and that became her routine every day. As she continued listening, her inability to move disappeared. She began walking again. Her speech gradually became better. With God’s help, Janet is recovering quickly.
