It is sobering to realize that vast segments of the rural population in Ghana still lack access to even the most basic healthcare services. While gleaming hospitals and cutting-edge treatments dominate urban landscapes, there exists a stark and often hidden reality in remote and deprived villages across Ghana. Theovision’s goal this August, is to reach out to these villages, that are geographically isolated and economically marginalized, and face a profound healthcare divide that compromises their overall well-being and perpetuates cycles of illness and poverty.
In the heart of Ghana’s Oti Region, Theovision International has brought medical doctors, missionaries, volunteers and other medical professionals from Accra to a dozen of such villages burdened by the weight of a lack of health care in the Jasikan District.
Nanankor Buem, a Muslim-dominated community, where the day 1 and 2 of the week-long outreach began, resonated with the sound of excited chatter as hundreds trooped in from surrounding villages; children and adults, to receive treatment at this once in a lifetime life-changing event. Nanakor Buem is a farming community with over 2000 residents known for ginger, cocoa, maize, cassava, and banana production. It is surrounded by villages like Jingare, Lekante, Dzoku, Kutei, Wode, and Odome.
Our medical team attended to many emergency cases, one of which was an epileptic patient who was rushed to the grounds just in time to receive treatment due to a seizure. Children with severe malaria, typhoid, and some diabetic patients were also administered IV fluids at our makeshift emergency ward.
The Mercy Ministry, a treasure trove of clothing and warmth, reached out to everyone present to handpick from a range of clothing, shoes, and bags. The Children’s Ministry, staffed with lovely teachers and volunteers, guided the children in engaging in various activities like oral hygiene education, colouring, and dancing to the rhythm of joy, their hearts learning verses of hope, and their voices echoing with action songs.
Amidst these blossoming moments, the audio Bible in Ewe language was being played to all those gathered and waiting their turn to be attended to. After receiving treatment, each person goes through Biblical counselling and is prayed for by our team of missionaries. At the end of the 2 days in Nanankor, 54 people received Christ into their hearts, to the Glory of God. The National Health Insurance team also registered 197 children and adults above age 60 onto the Insurance Scheme.
As the sun set on the people of Nanakor Buem, the team had treated 1,202 people mothers and their newborn babies, children, adults and the elderly. The impact of Theovision International’s medical outreach in Nanankor Buem was undeniable. Hundreds of lives were touched, and the spirit of hope had been rekindled within this tight-knit community.
