From Despair to Hope: Hawa’s Journey to Faith and New Life in Christ

My name is Hawa Salamu. I am a farmer and I live in Nanuaribee, Kundugu in the WA East District of the Upper West Region.

We are a Muslim family. My husband left us in 2020 in search of greener pastures. Unfortunately, he abandoned me and the children after he left.

Our situation became so bad I even contemplated suicide because of the suffering and the shame. I also considered committing adultery to get a little support to look after my children.

The situation also affected my children badly. They began to worry about my condition and their father’s long absence. The eldest child, Mustapha, stopped schooling at primary 6 in order to work and support me and the other kids. Mustapha’s educational ambition has been shattered as his school mates are currently preparing to sit for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

But in 2022, a relative invited me to join a Bible listening group. I used to challenge the existence of the Christian God and I never thought I would one day surrender my life to Jesus. But I found so much encouragement, peace and comfort any time I listened to the audio Bible.

One day, after evaluating my life, the turn of events, the peace and hope I have received from listening to the scriptures, I went to the listening group leader and told him I was ready to give my life to Christ. I followed him to church the next day and confessed Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior!

Currently, I am preparing for water baptism in the Roman Catholic Church, where I fellowship. By the grace of God, all my four children have also followed me to church and we are enjoying our new found faith with God.

Although my husband has not returned and things are not any better than before, the joy, peace and support from God and family members is enough to get us going. I no longer have suicidal thoughts and I have also abandoned the idea of going in for another man to provide for our needs.

I trust God everything will work out to his glory!
