Mamanya Gafatsi, a 60-year-old woman residing in Gafatsikope, has firmly come to the belief that “Only Jesus Christ holds the solution.”
In her own words, Mamanya recounts her journey: “I diligently raised my son with aspirations for him to become a teacher. I embraced my faith as a joyful Christian and took pride in my son’s achievements. My son went on to teach in Akatsi, a nearby town. However, my world was shattered when I received news that my son had fallen seriously ill. Upon reaching Akatsi, I discovered that my son had developed a severe mental illness, a heart-wrenching situation for me.”
This ordeal severely tested her faith. In her quest for her son’s healing, there were countless pressures from family members and loved ones to consult a traditional healer. She eventually succumbed to their suggestions, deviating from her Christian belief. She tirelessly sought healing for her son by visiting various shrines, but unfortunately, hers son’s illness remained unhealed.
Amidst all these challenges, the Bible Listening program was introduced to her community. Mamanya agreed to take up a leadership role and underwent training accordingly. Along with her new responsibility, she was provided with an audio Bible. After two months of active participation in the program, Mamanya made a decision to recommit her life to Christ, acknowledging that she had lost her way. Remarkably, she witnessed a gradual improvement in her son’s mental health, reinforcing her conviction that true healing and solace can only be found in Jesus.
Mamanya has ultimately found happiness in her role as a Bible Listening Group leader, firm in her newfound understanding that only Jesus holds the ultimate solution.
